ABOUT College View Housing Co-Op

College View Housing Co-op in Toronto was purchased by the City in 1977. It consists of five three-story buildings with 49 units total. In 1980, tenants began organizing to form a Tenants' Association. By March 1981, they voted to develop their own housing co-operative. Throughout 1981, the tenants worked to establish the co-op structure, including electing a Board, forming committees, and developing management plans.

On September 10, 1981, "College View Housing Co-operative Inc." was officially incorporated. The co-op retained legal counsel, opened a bank account, and approved by-laws. A management plan was prepared outlining the co-op's systems and organization. This plan included details on the organizational structure, staff requirements, member selection process, financial responsibilities, and maintenance. The co-op was poised to become a self-managed housing entity, pending a referendum by City Hall to determine the wishes of the majority of residents.
